CFIA - what is it and what does it mean?

Q: What does CFIA stand for?
A: Canadian Food Inspection Agency, an agency answering directly to the federal government’s Minister of Health.

Q: What does CFIA inspected mean?
A: The CFIA sets out strict standards and regulations in the storage, handling and processing of food intended for human consumption. Being certified as CFIA Inspected means that Simply Raw’s procedures either meet or exceed the standards set out by the CFIA.
Also CFIA Inspected means total traceability. From the moment a product arrives at our facility it’s recorded. We can prove where every product in a customer's box came from. On what day it arrived, what factory it came from, and so on.

Q: Aren’t all pet food manufacturers CFIA inspected?
A: No. The Canadian pet food industry is largely unregulated. Regulations exist around items not allowed in food (Specified Risk Materials/SRMs) and how food must be labelled but that’s about it. Passing CFIA inspection is not mandatory and only a handful of raw pet food manufacturers in Canada can carry the CFIA Inspected logo.

Q: So why did Simply Raw work to become CFIA inspected if it’s not mandatory?
A: Simply Raw has only used human-grade ingredients* from federally inspected facilities and has always taken all aspects of food hygiene very seriously by striving to achieve the standards set out for human food processing and production. Making it official gives our customers reassurance they are feeding high-quality food made in a safe and hygienic environment.

* The green tripe used in some our recipes is not for human consumption. The process of making tripe safe for human consumption removes almost all of the nutrients that make raw green tripe a bit of a superfood.
